Meet Steve Rando

Hi, I’m Steve Rando, the heart and hands behind Rando Guitar. My journey with the guitar began at a young age, and what started as a personal passion has evolved into a lifelong pursuit of musical excellence. Over the past three decades, I have had the privilege of performing, composing, and teaching countless students across Melbourne, helping each one unlock their potential and achieve their musical goals.

A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, I currently lecture in Popular Music Studies at Victoria University while completing a PhD in Music Education. My research focuses on creativity, collaboration, and informal learning within contemporary music settings. I am also the author of Contemporary Performance Craft (Rando, 2001) and Notes in the Air: Exploring Informal Music Practices in Popular Music Group Teaching (2020), both reflecting my commitment to advancing music education in Australia.

Whether you are a complete beginner strumming your first chords or an advanced player refining your style, my teaching approach is personalised, flexible, and encouraging. Lessons are available in-person at my Parkdale studio or online via Zoom, covering a wide range of genres including rock, blues, jazz, and folk. My goal is to make learning the guitar accessible, enjoyable, and deeply rewarding for every student.

Beyond teaching, I am an active performer within Melbourne’s music scene. My acoustic playing is known for its subtle sophistication, providing the perfect accompaniment for vocalists and instrumentalists. As a freelance guitarist, I have performed in tribute shows, jazz ensembles, music theatre productions, and with original artists such as Xavier Rudd. Whether it is an intimate acoustic set, a lively band performance, or a corporate event, I bring a blend of professionalism, artistry, and passion to every performance.

At Rando Guitar, I aim to create an environment where learning, performing, and appreciating music come together - helping you connect not just with the instrument, but with the joy of making music itself.

Whether you’re here to learn or listen, I’m excited to share my love of music with you!

In addition to running Rando Guitar, I lecture in Popular Music Studies at Victoria University within the College of Arts and Education. Teaching at VU allows me to combine my academic background with my professional experience as a performer and educator, helping students develop both their technical skills and their creative voice.

My classes explore areas such as performance, composition, collaboration, and creativity in contemporary music. I aim to create a learning environment that feels inspiring, practical, and relevant to the real world of music-making. I encourage students to think critically about their musical choices while building the confidence to perform, record, and compose across a range of styles.

I am currently completing a PhD in Music Education, where my research focuses on informal learning, collaboration, and creativity within popular music group settings. Through this work, I hope to bridge the gap between traditional teaching approaches and the lived experiences of musicians, ensuring that music education continues to evolve alongside the modern creative industry.
